Hiking and Trekking in The
Torres del Paine National Park
The Torres del Paine National Park is site of some the best hiking in the world. Some hikes can be done as a continuous hiking route through the park, and some can be done as day trips from hotels in Torres del Paine. Refer to the map at the bottom of this page for a better idea of how the park is laid out.
The "W" Route:
All the highlights of this popular route can be seen by doing day-trips from the hotels in Torres del Paine. A number of these can also be done on horse-back.
Refugio and Hosteria Las Torres to Mirador Las Torres
This is a four hour one-way route that is done by most of the people that visit the park. The hike is about a three hour easy walk through forests that eventually leads to a rather tiring one hour scramble up rocks and boulders to the final viewpoint of the Torres Mountains. The last part can be difficult, but as long as you take your time and walk slowly, it will not be problematic.
Refugio and Hosteria Las Torres to Refugio Los Cuernos
This five hour hike is the longest single stretch that hikers take on the "W" Route in Torres del Paine. There is the Refugio Los Cuernos five hours down the route that can be a good place to spend the night. Winds are sometimes fierce along this route, but hikers are rewarded by majestic views of the Lake Nordenskjold and the beautiful mountains and valleys beyond.
Refugio Los Cuernos to the end of Valle del Frances
This five hour route is one of the most beautiful in the park. The walk between Mount Paine Grande to the West and the Cuernos del Paine to the East is trully awe-inspiring. There are campsites at Italiano and Britannico on the way. The path to Refugio Pehoe is about the same five hours from the end of Valle del Frances.
Refugio Pehoe to Refugio Lago Grey
This four hour hike is relatively easy with a few downhill walks that you need to take your time with. Great views of Lago Grey keep the hiking upbeat and pleasant. There is another thirty minute hike to the lookout over Glacier Grey from the Refugio.
Glacier Trekking in Torres del Paine:
Only one company is authorized to lead glaciers treks on Glacier Grey in Torres del Paine, but the experience is very wortwhile if you can get yourself on this excursion. The day starts with a few hour hike and another few hour walk on the glacier in crampons and harnesses. You will have vivid memories of the beautiful glacier and it's interesting ice caves to remember after this day outdoors.
